Building With God: How I Discovered That Purpose Is Not a Formula

"Purpose is not something you construct for yourself. Purpose is revealed through intimacy with God, total obedience, and alignment with His original design."

For many years, I searched for purpose the same way many people do, by looking for answers in books, programs, and step-by-step formulas.

I distinctly remember reading The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren and diligently working through the daily chapters. I checked all the boxes and completed the journey on paper. Yet, after consuming a mountain of good information, I realized I had missed something foundational: I was collecting knowledge, but I hadn't yet built an intentional, daily intimacy with God.

Like so many believers and leaders, I wanted purpose to be fast and simple. I hoped for a shortcut, a quick diagnostic or a clear checklist that would instantly tell me who I was meant to be and what I was meant to do.

But Kingdom purpose rarely reveals itself through shortcuts.

The Shift From Seeking Formulas to Seeking God

It wasn’t until my early thirties that everything began to truly transform. When I consciously chose to prioritize my walk with God over my ambitions, my perspective shifted. I stopped asking God to sign off on my plans and started asking Him to reveal His.

Through dedicated prayer, deep study of Scripture, mentorship, and accountability, I began to see His fingerprints across my entire life. I recognized how He had graciously protected me from paths that would have derailed my destiny, and how His hand had been guiding me long before I had the maturity to understand His plan.

In that season of altar-building and surrender, the Holy Spirit made a life-changing truth clear to me:

You cannot discover your assignment until you discover your Identity in the Assignor.

When you know who God is, you finally understand who He created you to be. Purpose is not an achievement to unlock; it is the natural fruit of staying connected to the Vine.

The Hidden Tragedy: Succeeding in the Wrong Assignment

As my alignment with God deepened, I began to see the marketplace, the church, and the entrepreneurial world with new eyes.

I saw brilliant, gifted, and hardworking Kingdom leaders struggling deeply. Many made good money and lived comfortable lives, yet felt a persistent, quiet emptiness. They were running on the treadmill of "hustle culture", constantly launching new projects, chasing popular trends, taking on roles God never assigned to them, and burning out in confusion.

They were busy doing everything except the specific thing God had asked them to build.

They were succeeding, but in the wrong assignment.

When you thrive in the wrong place, you neglect the place God intended for you. And when you neglect your God-given assignment, the people you were positioned to deliver, serve, and heal miss out on the impact you were called to bring.

The Birth of Thrive Pathways Group

This realization broke my heart, but it also birthed a deep, holy conviction within me.

God did not call His people to manage chaotic collections of ad hoc services, operate in financial fear, or copy secular business models that drain their souls. He called us to serve as priests in the marketplace, building strategies, systems, and organizations that reflect Heaven's excellent order (Matthew 6:10).

Thrive Pathways Group was born out of this mandate.

We exist to ensure Kingdom-minded builders, entrepreneurs, and leaders don't have to walk this journey alone or figure it out through trial and error. We merge spiritual discernment with practical business architecture, helping you move from confusion to clarity, from ad-hoc striving to divine alignment, and from an idea in the Spirit to a structured, sustainable enterprise on Earth.

3 Lessons for Your Building Journey Today

If you are currently feeling stuck, unfulfilled, or uncertain about what God is asking you to build in this season, I want to leave you with three simple truths:

1 Stop Rushing the Foundation: Do not build external expressions (logos, websites, offers) before establishing internal clarity (identity, vision, and spiritual alignment).

2 Busy Is Not the Same as Aligned: You can be active in church and successful in business, yet completely out of position. Take time to ask God: "Is this what You asked me to steward?"

3 Obedience Unlocks Structure: God does not just give vision; He gives the wisdom and systems to sustain it. When you honor His sequence, the resources and clarity will follow.
